Story of Luxmi Devi

Lakshmi Devi is a widowed woman residing in an urban area, living with her three daughters in a nuclear family setup. She belongs to a Hindu family from the General category and holds a BPL ration card, reflecting the economically vulnerable condition of her household. Laxmi Devi studied up to the 5th standard and has been working as a daily wage laborer, which is currently the only source of income for the family. She lost her husband, Jai Prakash, about one year ago due to a heart attack, after which the entire responsibility of earning and caring for the family fell on her shoulders. With no other earning members in the household, she struggles to manage monthly family expenses of ₹5,000–₹10,000 on an income of less than ₹12,000 per month, making it difficult to meet basic needs and ensure consistent education for her children.

Laxmi Devi has three school-going daughters, all enrolled in government schools under the RTE framework. She is deeply committed to securing a better future for her children but faces significant financial constraints due to the instability of daily wage work. Despite these challenges, she demonstrates strong determination, good confidence, and a willingness to work independently to improve her family’s living conditions.

She has prior experience in small business activities and possesses basic knowledge and relevant skills related to trade. Recognizing the need for a stable and sustainable livelihood, Laxmi Devi aspires to start a vegetable shop, which has been assessed as viable within her locality due to consistent demand. Her family is supportive of her decision to initiate this business, and she also owns and uses a smartphone, which can help her manage basic business communication and transactions.

Laxmi Devi has no existing loans or debts and is not receiving benefits from any other government or organizational schemes, making her highly suitable for livelihood support. Given her single-earning status, family responsibilities, prior experience, and strong willingness, her profile has been assessed as “Excellent” for business support intervention.

With timely financial and technical assistance, Laxmi Devi’s vegetable shop has the potential to provide a regular and reliable income, reduce economic vulnerability, and ensure better nutrition, education, and security for her daughters, enabling the family to move toward long-term self-reliance.
